Title: Teenage Fundraiser Inspired by Granny Date Published: Friday 2nd September 2009 Source: Deeside Piper and Herald A Gregor Milne (16) was accompanied by only one other cyclist in his 2008 children In Need cycle, but subsequently formed a group called S M Cycling because he said he found he’d enjoyed fundraising for charity. As a result, almost 40 cyclists aged 5 yrs to adult (the group was primarily intended for secondary school-age youngsters) undertook a Big Summer Cycle on Monday, August 17 to raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland – Gregor’s grandmother died from the condition last year – and though they initially aimed to raise £1,000 they have now collected £1,300 with sponsorship funds still due to come in. Around 700,000 people in the Gregor said “At the moment, most forms of dementia cannot be cured so please support us so that we can help fight it – you never know when you might need the help of Alzheimer People can still donate on-line at www.justgiving.com/smcyclinggroup, where the money is send direct to Alzheimer The young cyclists have been supported by Somerfield stores and encouraged by their teachers at The enterprising teenager also managed to set up a live interview on SHMU Radio (99.8 fm) during the August cycle run and were treated to a BBQ after their efforts by John Johnstone of the Brinker Technology company. Alzheimer Now Gregor, who plans to leave school at the end of 4th year, hoping to join Grampian Police Cadets, has already organised the group’s next sponsored cycle ride, which takes place on Sunday, October 25, when they will cycle from Peterculter to Aberdeen Duthie Park and back. Gregor said: “The cycle is open to anyone who is confident on a bike, old or young! All profits from the cycle will go to the “Village To Village” charity which supports local initiatives in rural For more information or to register for the cycle ride get in touch with Gregor at smcyclinggroup@mail2sports.com, and log onto their website on http://www.smcyclinggroup.webs.com/

An inspiring duo of teenagers have started their own cycling group called S M Cycling, read more about them on pg 21. They are doing a cycle from Banchory Park to Duthie Park and back again, all for Alzheimer Scotland.
The S M Cycling Group was formed in June 2008 by Gregor Milne (15) & Caleb Small (14). The aim of raising money for charity. The two youngsters decided to form the group after the media were conjuring up an image that young people were – “bad news”. So they formed a group which would hold sponsored cycles to help others. It has been a big success – all round. Since forming the group have held two sponsored cycles. Money raised went to BBC Children In Need Appeal and Cancer Link Aberdeen and North (CLAN).
The S M Cycling Group is one of the few cycling groups for youths in the area and is affiliated to the Aberdeen Sports Council. It’s open to anyone aged 10 – 16. Small membership fee of £4.00 and this is donated to charity. It is entirely youth run making it the only one of its kind in Aberdeen!
Next Event: Mon, 17 August 09. A Cycle from the Banchory Park to the Duthie Park and back again! Aiming to raise £1000 for Alzheimer Scotland. The SM Cycling Group was formed in June 2008 by two 14 year olds from Peterculter. Gregor Milne and Caleb Small set up the group with two main aims. First is to raise money for good causes and second is to encourage youths to cycle more rather than hanging around shop corners. To date they have held two fund raising rides one for Children in Need and another for CLAN. This coming year they are aiming to raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland. The event to be held in August is open to youths 10 – 16 years of age and they are hoping for 10 – 15 riders. The event is to be dedicated to Barbara Milne who died in July 2008. In Aberdeen there are few if any groups like the SM Cycling Group. They started from scratch and are run by young people aged from 10 – 16. They take no personal monetary benefits from their work with all funds raised being turned over to the worthy causes. They have had a very successful first six months and deserve support. They are looking for sponsorship and can recognise any prospective sponsor by showing details on posters for events, including information on mailing lists and publishing links on their web site. More information is available on their web site www.smcyclinggroup.webs.com
